Orioles Excel at Academic Decathlon

January 29, 2013

Sam Frederick and Angie Hoogland competed in the United States Academic Decathlon(USAD) Regionals at Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids this past Saturday.  While not a “complete” team of 9 students, these two ladies represented Springville with pride!  Coaches Ms. Bristow and Mr. Stoll worked with them on ten subjects: Art, Music, Economics, Social Science, Science, Language and Literature, Mathematics, Interview, Speech, and Essay (not administered at the regional level).

As Springville’s first year of competing, these two students have paved the way to future successes in Academic Decathlon. Sam and Angie earned a medal for Springville in all nine categories! Congratulations to Samantha Frederick for earning second place in Language and Literature, second place in Mathematics, second place in Interview, and third place in Social Science.  Congratulations to Angie Hoogland for earning first place in Language and Literature, first place in Mathematics, first place in Art, first place in Speech, first place in Economics, third place in Science, third place in Social Science, and third place in Music. Wonderfully, Angie also earned the most points out of any student in the small school category, which means that Angie will be competing at the State Competition at Mount Vernon High School on March 1 and 2.  Way to go, ladies!
